Locating updated drivers is easy!
Modem troubleshooting is perhaps one of the most difficult computer issues to resolve, since there are a lot of issues to consider such as ISP connection, internet speed, hardware (modem, cables, modem card), and software (drivers and operating system). Make sure that you have performed all the troubleshooting steps before thinking about hardware replacement.
- Make Sure that the User Information are Correct
Make sure that you are supplying the correct connection information to your ISP. If at least one of the required information is incorrect, the modem may dial but will not be able to get online.
Also see to it that you are using the correct phone number, area code and prefix of your ISP. If you are unsure whether you have the correct information, you may contact your internet service provider for verification.
- See if the Modem Dials
See if the modem dials to the ISP. If the modem does not dial but a dial tone is present on the phone, most probably the issue is a software problem (driver, OS, etc.). If it’s not, then, connect the line jack directly on the modem and see if the issue is resolved by doing that. Otherwise, contact your internet service provider for technical support.
If the modem is dialing during initialization, it is possible that your modem is connecting to the ISP, but there are performance issues in internet connection speed. Try to connect at a lower speed.
- Reinstall Modem Driver
Reinstall the modem driver with the best or latest version. You may either download the driver from your vendor’s website or from the driver CD that came with the modem.
In reinstalling the modem driver, it is recommended to uninstall the current driver first. The device drivers can be found in the Device Manager. To go there, Click on Start and right-click on the My Computer icon. Select Manage on the drop-down list. The Computer Management window would appear next. Click on Device Manager to see the list of device drivers installed in the system.
To uninstall the current driver, click on the plus (+) sign before Modems. Then, find your modem device and right-click on it. Click uninstall and follow the rest of the uninstallation procedure. After the uninstallation, run the installation program for installing the best driver for your modem.
There are cases wherein you would see some yellow question marks or exclamation points before one of your devices. These indicate either a missing or corrupted driver on your computer system. Reinstalling the driver often resolves these kinds of issues.
If you are uncertain whether you have the best version of a modem driver, there are some commercial software available that would automatically scan your computer for driver issues, and install them once they found a device that needs a driver update. Consider using one of these applications when dealing with device driver issues.
- Connect Using a Different ISP
If available, try to test the modem if it would connect to a different ISP. If it does, then you may need to contact the other ISP for technical support. If the modem does not connect, something must be wrong with the modem. See if your modem is supported by your ISP.
If you are sure that your modem is supported by your internet service provider, proceed to the next step.
- Check the Cables
See if the cables are not damaged and in good condition. If there is another cable available, try to test it and see if the problem is still the same. You may also try a direct line. If all else fails, proceed to the next troubleshootin step.
- Test the Connection with Another Modem
If another modem is available, you may use it to test your internet connection. Make sure that the said modem is in good working condition. If it connects to your ISP, consider modem replacement. If the issue is the same, consult your ISP for further assistance.
It would also be helpful to perform some hardware tests on your modem to make sure that it is indeed defective. Most of these testing utilities are commercial although some maybe free to use.
Troubleshooting Cable Modem Services
There are two types of cable modem services: two-way cable modems and one-way cable modems. A two-way cable modem receives and sends information over the cable. A one-way cable modem receives information over the cable and sends information over the phone line.
Troubleshooting Cable Modem Connectivity
If you are unable to connect to the Internet by using a cable modem, you should first verify that you are not experiencing a cable outage. If your television has good cable reception and you are still unable to connect to the Internet using your cable modem, follow the troubleshooting steps in the appropriate section below:
Two-Way Cable Service
Two-way cable service uses a network adapter and a cable modem. You can use standard network connectivity troubleshooting to determine if the issue is a Windows XP connectivity issue.
One-Way Cable ServiceIf you are unable to connect to your cable company's Internet service provider (ISP), the connection is slow, or you connect but are unable to view any Web pages, use as many of the following steps as needed to resolve the issue. If one step does not work, proceed to the next step until the issue is resolved.
- There may be an interrupt request line (IRQ) or input/output (I/O) address resource conflict between your cable modem and another hardware device in your computer. This is usually indicated by an exclamation point in a yellow circle next to the device, or multiple incoming or outgoing cable modems listed in Device Manager.
If multiple incoming or outgoing cable modems are listed in Device Manager, remove the duplicate modem entries, and then follow the steps in the article to troubleshoot the resource conflict. To remove duplicate cable modem entries in Device Manager, follow these steps:
- Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click System.
- Click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager
- Double-click the Modem Branch to expand it.
- Click a duplicate cable modem, and then click Remove.
- After you remove all duplicate cable modems, click Close, and then restart your computer.
- If your cable modem is redetected every time you start your computer, the modem's software may be unable to communicate with the modem during the boot process. To resolve this issue, uninstall the modem driver and then install the latest driver for your cable modem. For information about how to obtain and install the latest driver for your cable modem, contact your cable company's ISP support group or your modem's manufacturer.
- If you are unable to connect to the Internet at all, contact your cable company's ISP support group to verify that the proxy server address, Domain Name Service (DNS) address, line-in frequency, and line-out phone number are correct.
If you are having performance problems while connected to the Internet, contact your cable company's ISP support group to verify that the connection parameters are in an acceptable range. Some cable modems include a utility that automatically obtains the correct cable connection parameters. If your modem does not include a utility such as this, you can usually obtain connection parameters from your cable company's ISP support group.
- If you have more than one network adapter on your multihomed Windows XP-based computer that is using Transport Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) address from the Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA) subnet range 169.254.0.0-169.254.255.255, subnet mask 255.255.0.0, routing to this subnet may not work.
NOTE: Some cable modems can be reset by unplugging and powering down the modem for 10 seconds and then powering the modem back up again.
