BIOS Troubleshooting

It is possible that your computer has BIOS problems if it exhibits one or more of the following behaviors:

  • The computer is freezing, even while it is still loading the BIOS screen
  • The computer displays a BIOS error message
  • Power issues
  • Performance issues
  • Booting problems
  • Problems when installing new hardware


Note that these issues may or may not be intermittent. Nevertheless, they all indicate a possible BIOS issue.

  1. Get the Codes

    Depending on the manufacturer, the system would often display a series of beep codes, LED codes, or light signals on the power button. Try to get this codes and consult your manufacturer’s user manual or technical support for further assistance.  If the computer system you are using is custom-made or does not have any of these indicators, proceed to the next troubleshooting step.

  2. Reset the BIOS Settings to Defaults

    To reset the BIOS to the default settings, restart the computer. While the computer is on the BIOS screen and performing memory tests, press on the F2 key (or Delete key) repeatedly until you see the BIOS setup screen. Use the Up and Down arrow keys to select Load BIOS Defaults and press Enter. After that, select Save & Exit setup and press Enter. The system will ask you for a confirmation on the changes made. Confirm the saving of the settings by selecting Yes/Save and pressing Enter. The system would automatically restart with the default settings afterward.


    BIOS Drivers Troubleshooting

    If the problem persists, try to load the performance defaults using the same procedure.

  3. See if there are problems with the power supply
  4. Check your power supply for any problems, especially if it’s making abnormal or relatively loud noises.

  5. Reseat the components inside your computer case.

    Though this process may seem difficult, it is possible that there are some loose connections between the components inside the computer case, especially the connections between the power supply and the motherboard.

    Shut down your computer. Unplug the power cord. Remove the power and data connections between each of the devices inside your computer case such as hard drives, optical drives, video cards, etc. Reestablish the connections and restart the computer. See if the problem persists.  

    If you the computer in question is a portable, skip this step and proceed to the next one.

  6. Flash the BIOS

    If the above-mentioned troubleshooting steps failed to resolve the issue, it may be necessary to flash the system BIOS. But be cautions, because a failed flash of the BIOS may result to a unusable motherboard. Make sure that you have performed all the above-mentioned troubleshooting steps before proceeding.

    To flash the BIOS, first, we need to get the BIOS update installer. It can be obtained through the motherboard or computer manufacturer’s website. If the computer is custom-built, it is recommended to get the update from the motherboard manufacturer. If the entire computer system is pre-built by manufacturers such as Dell, HP, or Acer, you may want to get the BIOS installer from them. Again, be cautious since downloading the incorrect update may lead to more problems for your computer.

    After downloading and extracting (if compressed) the installation file/s, close all active programs and run the application. After the installation, the setup would ask you to restart the computer. Restart the computer and see if the issue has been resolved.

  7. Replace the motherboard

    If you have reached this troublehooting step and still haven’t successfully resolved the BIOS issue, the motherboard may need to be replaced. 


Why Updating Drivers Is Important

Usually the only reason we look to install or update bios drivers is because something is malfunctioning. This is not the only reason you should keep your drivers up to date however. Manufacturers are constantly updating and improving performance of their devices and the only way to make use of this is by having the latest system drivers. Obviously going online and checking for new drivers all the time is not desirable so using a tool like the one at the top of this page you can keep all of your hardware running on the optimal drivers with top performance.

When new hardware is installed, although it works correctly, other hardware which interacts with it may not be, because the other hardware actually needs its own drivers updated.
