Should I keep my old computer?

September 25th, 2008 No comments

Should you keep your old computer once you upgrade to a new one or recycle/donate it?

An old computer can still be used for certain applications. As long as you keep updating the drivers, your computer should remain functional. Some new applications won’t work with your old computer, but if you are creative and update your drivers, your computer should remain usable. All devices needs the correct drivers to work, otherwise it is just a paperweight collecting dust.

When considering using your older computer with a new device, check the specs on the device first to see if it is compatible with the operating system on your computer. If you are linking a device you have already been using on a different computer to your old one, simply download the drivers from the device manufacturer’s website. You can also find software updates for your device in the same place.

Downloading new drivers can actually make your computer run faster. Do a little checking into what devices are on  your computer, what you use, what you don’t. Check for updates for the devices you use, remove the rest. You probably have devices linked to your old computer that you don’t even own anymore. Once your drivers are updated and your computer is cleaned up, you should be able to enjoy it and save the money you would have spent on a new system.
